Thursday Mornings Set For Chemical Applications
March 12, 2008 - The Golf Advisory Board has
approved a recommendation that tee times on Thursday
mornings will start at 7:30 instead of sunrise. This
will allow the maintenance staff time to apply
herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and fertilizer
to the greens, tees, fairways and roughs. It will
allow the maintenance crew to stay ahead of the
golfers and reduce the risk of exposure.
Opening
of the Golf Course
Spring
is approaching fast and everyone is looking forward to
getting out on the course. The driving range should
open around the 15th of March with the
course to follow a week later. This is all dependent on
the weather of course.
Security Gate Moved
The
security gate at the west end of the cart buildings has
been moved from the south side of the south cart
building to the north side of the north building. The
small doors at the west end of the cart buildings will
be kept locked. There are several reasons for this
listed below:
-
The
main electrical transformer was hit causing
electrical failure of the irrigation system in 2006,
and has been hit several times since.
-
There have been several accidents in the old gate
area and cars could be hit with golf balls from the
practice area.
-
Moving the gate will provide increased security for
the pro shop fuel tank and items stolen from private
carts.
-
The
parking lot can be monitored to keep people from
bringing their own alcoholic beverages onto the
course.

Golf
Board Seeks Comments on 2nd Public
Presentation Regarding Clubhouse Options
February 21,
2008 - A second
public information meeting was held by
the Golf Board and City of Pierre on
February 21 to continue discussions and
feedback from the golfing community on
options to improve Hillsview Clubhouse
and Pro-shop. Parks & Recreation
Division Director Tom Farnsworth said
that following the initial February 6
public meeting it was evident that a
second presentation was needed to
provide additional financial information
and reveal the public comments, “The
Golf Board and staff felt it was very
critical that the public, in addition to
what was shown February 6th, be advised
on the estimated costs of the various
options being considered. The initial
presentation concentrated on conceptual
design models that ranged from $300,000
to $900,000 in costs. We wanted to go
back to the public with more information
and a new option being proposed.” said
Farnsworth.
Citizens
are encouraged to click on the box “view
Feb 21st presentation” to see what was
discussed at the 2nd public meeting. The
public is being asked to also click on
the “feedback form” box to express their
opinion given the additional
information.
Farnsworth said the Golf Board will
continue to meet, review public comments
and work toward an acceptable option. No
date has been decided when a
recommendation will be forwarded to the
City Commission.

Golf
Board Seeks Comment on
Clubhouse/Pro-Shop Options
February 6, 2008 - The City of Pierre
Golf Advisory Board will hold a public informational meeting February 6
to present various design concepts for
an improved clubhouse/pro-shop at
Hillsview Municipal golf course.
The meeting will take place at the
Chamber of Commerce community room
beginning at 5:30 PM. In April of
2007, the City Commission accepted a
recommendation of the Golf Board to hire
an architect to study various design
concepts to improve the existing
clubhouse/pro-shop facility. The
present clubhouse was built in 1979, has
3,840 sq. ft. but lacks adequate space
to host large tournament events that are
now returning to Hillsview, post
reconstruction of the course.
Comments from a 2006 survey of the
Hillsview membership revealed the
clubhouse should be improved.
Seventy-four percent of the members
rated the clubhouse as average to below
average and fifty-one percent of members
said the clubhouse needs to be remodeled
to improve current services and
facilitate special events.
Mitchell based Architect Brad
Ciavarella, who has been working
with the Golf Board, will
present five different concepts
at the meeting. In
addition to remodeling the
current clubhouse, one of the
concepts is to lease space from
the owner of the former Elks
building located just east of
the present clubhouse.
Parks & Recreation Division
Director Tom Farnsworth says the
Golf Board has made no decision
on which design or concept they
prefer. “The Board wants
to take their work to date to
the golf membership and general
public for comment prior to
making a recommendation to the
Mayor and City Commission.
This public meeting is simply
the next step in the decision
making process.”
Farnsworth said the City
Commission has not budgeted
funds for a new clubhouse but
has asked the Golf Board and
staff to search for solutions to
improve the current facility.
